01. Inclusion Starts with Understanding

As a wheelchair user, this internship gave me a deeper appreciation of the importance of seeing the world from different perspectives. While researching ways to improve the dining experience for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), I discovered that the challenges faced by people with visual impairments are often far more complex than I had imagined. Difficulties may arise not only from inaccessible online ordering systems, but also throughout the entire dining journey, from finding a seat and locating the queue to collecting food and returning trays.

My internship at the DIO this summer was both rewarding and challenging. Through research, communications, and event planning, I was able to apply my own experiences while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by different groups on campus. I hope to continue contributing to a more inclusive university community and help bring about small but meaningful changes that make a difference to others.

02. A Summer of Growth

Coming from a science background, I found that interning at the DIO opened my eyes to a completely different field beyond my academic discipline. Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to apply my creativity while gaining new perspectives that broadened my horizons. The experience exposed me to a wide range of topics and encouraged me to approach them with a more open mind. 

As an international student, I have experienced firsthand the rich diversity and inclusive culture that CUHK fosters, both through its campus events and within its community. These values have become an important part of my own beliefs, which made being able to actively contribute to and promote them incredibly fulfilling. 

I am ending this journey with far more than I began with, including invaluable experiences and lasting memories. It is the kind of experience that stays with you long after the summer ends.

03. Learning, Creating, and Connecting at DIO

My interest in diversity and inclusion first blossomed when I joined the Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador Programme. Participating in the Wheelchair Experience Workshop opened my eyes to the importance of accessible facilities, and as a student helper at “In-tea-gration” , I shared tea cultures from around the world with the University community. These moments deepened my appreciation of equality and respect and motivated me to apply for a summer internship at the DIO , where I hoped to contribute to these values on campus.

During my time at DIO, I assisted in the promotional campaigns and offered creative ideas for new D&I initiatives. I also supported the coordination and filming the Orientation Camp highlight videos , where I was inspired by the students’ creativity in incorporating diversity and inclusion into their activities in such engaging and meaningful ways. These experiences not only enriched my organizational and teamwork skills but also sharpened my communication skills. 

Throughout the journey, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on campus. This experience has truly fuelled my passion for community engagement.

04. Every Piece Matters

In my daily life, I am always aware of diverse voices and the rights of minority groups, believing that an inclusive environment creates greater equality and freedom for all. Yet, I often wonder: what do diversity and inclusion truly mean? Is it limited to race, gender, or disability? And how can I play a part in nurturing a more inclusive campus? 

With these questions of “what is it” and “what can I do”, I joined the Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) as an intern. Through planning activities, collecting information about inclusive facilities, preparing promotional items, and supporting the Orientation Camp Sponsorship Scheme, I learned to notice the subtle but significant details: a thoughtful slogan on a campus wall💬, an inclusive message in a video, translation support for non-Cantonese-speaking students, or small gestures that encourage mutual respect and cultural exchange. 

I’ve come to realize that D&I is not just a broad social topic, but a belief we live out in our daily actions—respecting every difference and ensuring every voice is heard and valued. Each of us holds a small piece of the puzzle; by joining hands, we create a truly inclusive campus and, together, foster a more harmonious society.

05. From Observer to Contributor

Before my internship at CUHK’s Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO), I often noticed the university’s efforts to promote inclusivity, such as gender-neutral facilities and vibrant diversity flags across campus. As an outsider, I wondered: could these initiatives truly meet the needs of all groups and strengthen the campus’s inclusive atmosphere? These questions sparked my curiosity about the impact of such policies. 

This summer, as a DIO intern, I got to join in planning and carrying out these initiatives, learning about the work behind them. I teamed up with colleagues and administrative units, taking part in discussions and helping shape inclusive policies to make sure everyone on campus feels respected. This experience showed me the value of these efforts, motivated me to jump into inclusivity work and share new ideas to build a more inclusive CUHK.
